Biblical Absurdities: Faith

Biblical Quotes

(Emphasis added by me).

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

In other words, trust blindly in the Lord. Do not trust in the Lord because of reason, choose to believe in him because of emotion.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Hebrews 11:1

Faith is the acceptance of claims for no reason, as this makes clear. To exercise faith is not to do so because you see a reason to do so, but because you want it to be true.

There is a better word than “assurance” for that which you choose to accept for no reason. That word is “delusion”.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Corinthians 5:7

Again, look not to the outside world for reasons for faith. There are none.

Faith has nothing to do with reality. Those that do not care about what reality is, what the facts do not care about reality. Sight can only be a hindrance to believing what you want to believe for no reason.

Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

John 20:29
Doubting Thomas is presented by the Bible as an unsympathetic character for daring to rely on the evidence of his senses…

So, according to Jesus, the righteous are those that see no reason to believe something but choose to believe it anyway.

Blessed are those that do not use their eyes but blindly accept Jesus for no reason. Blessed are those that do not bother to use their senses or their brain.

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect”

Peter 3:15

You are not to allow anyone to have reasons for that hope. In other words, defend reason against all reason.

Here we see the Bible openly advocating the defense of faith against reason and by implication, reality.

For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

Romans 8:24-25

Hope accepted for reasons is apparently not valid.

We should not be surprised to find the Bible encouraging people not to see, not to think. Because sight and thought are the antithesis of faith and the things most likely to destroy faith.

We have seen that faith is the blind acceptance of empty assertions in the absence of proof or evidence. This leads people to reject reality and often to fight against it.

This is exactly the kind of faith that the Bible demands of its followers. Not justified trust, but blind acceptance of empty assertions.
