A Futile Debate with a God-Botherer…

Phil

Is knowledge absolute?

Metaphysician

Reality is. What exists, exists. Now, you can try to argue that I cannot properly see it, which I would not buy. But there is no way to argue that reality is not what it is.

Phil

How do you know what is and what exists and can you validate it?

Metaphysician

If you are going to argue reality isn’t reality, then there is not any point trying to argue with you about anything. Since you can always say red is blue or dogs are ducks.

Phil

Are you certain about that?

Metaphysician

Are you going to argue reality isn’t real? Because if reality isn’t real, for that reason then there goes God. Since we can’t be sure God is God or exists.

Phil

Reality is what God says and what is according to God’s word.

Metaphysician

Prove it. Prove that God is what reality says. Give me one reason why I should think that.

Phil

Your worldview can’t proof anything that’s the point, I have to presuppose God.

Metaphysician

A Book Says A Thing does not count. But yours can, right? Or are you at least honest enough to admit you assume without reason?

But yes, I can prove lots of things. I can prove that I exist. I can prove that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Easy. Countless people have done such things. Proof is not impossible.

Books are tools of cognition. Not an excuse not to think.

Phil

Well, your worldview can’t justify intelligibility.

Metaphysician

Of course it can. Yours however, cannot.

Intelligibility is simply the state reached when you can understand things. The natural world is intelligible. Things are what they are, we can look at them and figure out what they are and how they relate to one another.

Phil

Things are what they are. I’m sorry but such a statement is stupid.

Metaphysician

Things are what they are. Very good. How is that stupid?

Things are not what they are? Are cats not cats? Dogs not dogs? Blue not blue? Its stupidly obvious yes, but not to a lot of people.

Phil

That’s not what I meant.

Metaphysician

So how is that statement stupid?

Phil

“I exist because I exist” is a logical fallacy, it’s a truth claim that can’t be justify as truth without God.

Metaphysician

That is not what I said. I said things are what they are. To exist is to have identity, to have a nature, a specific, non-contradictory nature. To be what you are.

I did not say “things exist because they exist”.

Phil

Well, all things you say, you have no justification for that.

Metaphysician

And you do? What is your justification for God, Phil? If it is Because A Book Said A Thing, we are done right now.

Phil

Any claim to ultimate authority must be self-authorizing.

Metaphysician

Why does truth depend on Authority, Phil? Why cannot something be true, without this authority of which you speak?

Yes, truth depends on something objective. The facts of reality. The nature of the things that exist and their relationships to each other.

Phil

Because without God I can’t proof anything.

Objection, I proved lots of things without God. You know, using that science thing…

Metaphysician

Then you cannot prove that without God you can’t prove anything

Phil

Could you be wrong about everything you claimed?

Metaphysician

You cannot claim that “I cannot prove anything without God” but expect that to validate itself.

No. There is no chance I am wrong about anything I have said here.

There are things I and anyone else, can know with 100% certainty. Because we can prove them.

You cannot. You only have presupposition. But again, then you cannot prove that without God you can’t prove anything

Phil

How do you get knowledge?

Metaphysician

If you cannot prove anything without God, then how do you know that you cannot prove anything without God? Did you have to assume God existed to validate that statement?

Phil

You claim to have knowledge, do you?

Metaphysician

Answer the question. If you cannot prove anything without God, then how do you know that you cannot prove anything without God?

Phil

No, you borrow from my worldview.

Metaphysician

I certainly do not borrow from a worldview of those that dishonestly believe nonsense for no reason and defend it against reason. Answer the question.

Phil

I don’t do bible study with unbeliever.

Metaphysician

Yes, because most of them probably know the Bible better than you do. But answer the question.

We are not moving on until you answer it. I will keep asking until you give up or answer.

Phil

What do you want to know?

Metaphysician

I have asked like three times. If you cannot prove anything without God, then how do you know that you cannot prove anything without God?

Phil

Because the Bible says so.

Metaphysician

Is that your final answer? Because A Book Says A Thing? Because my book says another thing. How do you know my book is not correct?
